Look, leaving Rochester isn’t entirely a good thing. I’ve lived here
basically my entire life, so there is of course family and many friends
who will be missed. After that there’s not much to like about this town
really, but there are a few that me and my family absolutely love.
These are the things we’ll miss. First up will be our biggest loss:

Monroe County, New York – County Clerk

Government has a reputation for running poorly. Consider the DMV or IRS. Surely you’ve waited in line for long periods to renew your license only to find out from the disgruntled employee you are missing some vital piece of information, which it turns out later you really don’t need at all. Multiply this level of ineptitude and frustration 100 times and you’ll have the Monroe County Clerk’s Office.

If this government office were a private company it would have been out of business decades ago. This office is the typical government cliche come to life in the form of Dr. Frankenstein’s monster. It exemplifies all that is wrong with local government without any of the good.

The leadership is incompetent, apathetic and rudderless. The employees are, with a few exceptions, unprofessional, undereducated and extraordinarily slow and unhelpful. The office policies in regard to their “customers” are seemingly pointless and made without careful consideration, while enforcement is sporadic and erratic and not in anyway even handed. And none of it will ever change. Well, it may get worse, but it won’t change for the better.

I love baking bread. I’m not really all that great at it yet, but (as they say) even the worst home baked bread is better than store bought. Since I’m just trying to fill space on this blog for now until I get some GOOD ideas, here’s a not very good picture I took with my phone of some tasty bread I baked.

PS: The guy that said that thing about home baked bread never had Wegmans’ bread…more on that later.

Attention callers to radio shows! “Irregardless” is NOT, repeat IS NOT a real word.

That is all.

Thank You.

Regarding the Title

The blog’s title “Earthquakes & Sharks” is shamelessy taken from the song of the same name by the band Brandtson. A clever little tune about an unwitting traveler’s adventures in SoCal & Mexico. More info on the band at Brandston’s mySpace page here: http://www.myspace.com/brandtson

So, when we tell friends and family and acquaintances that we are moving to San Diego they most regularly ask if it’s for work or family. It’s neither.

When we thell them it is for school, and that in fact my wife has been accepted to a competetive PhD. program at UC San Diego we are often met with surprise. Suddenly my wife is the smartest person they ever met! (Something I already knew, BTW)

Anyway, there are many fringe benefits as well of course. No more Rochester/Webster for one. San Diegeo’s idyllic setting and lifestyle make two. Need more? Stay tuned…this is where I will make it know just exactly WHY we are moving to San Diego.
